Case-Fox, Viviane

Case-Fox, Viviane

Born in 1950 and of Hungarian descent, Viviane Case-Fox grows up in Montreal with her family; her personal journey, fraught with rich experiences, has lead her to painting…

At the age of 14, Viviane begins a modelling career which eventually takes her to New-York.  Her ties to Montreal contribute to her decision to return to Canada, where she works for Air Canada – first in Toronto, then in Montreal – after which she is invited by Iona Monahan to contribute to the fashion section of the Montreal Gazette.  In addition to writing her articles – some of which are picked up by the National Press Agency – Viviane sometimes gets involved with photography, nurturing her creativity.  When she is 29, she marries a federal Member of Parliament (then minister responsible for the realisation of the Canadian Museum of Fine Arts and the Museum of Civilisation); they have two children and she splits her time between family life and artistic pursuits.

When her daughter enters high school, Viviane signs up for classes at the Saydie Bronfman Centre and studies under Philip Iverson and Marilyn Rubinstein, who recognize the artist’s strength and encourage her professional endeavours.  Exhibitions with the Nun’s Island Art Group, as well as with Les Femmeuses follow.  It should be noted that, to ensure that her work was appreciated for itself rather than in light of her husband’s relations, Viviane Case-Fox’s first exhibition was held abroad.

Viviane Case-Fox’s paintings, though vibrant and dynamic, somehow convey a sense of restraint… That being, they not only bear witness to the artist’s sensitivity and generosity, they demonstrate her ability to transpose on canvas the emotions that she allows to fully develop in her.
