Born in 1925, Torontonian John Joy is one of the few artists today who devotes himself to painting on location.
Drawing is Joy’s first passion and leads the way in the creation of his back-alley architecture”. Though he has traveled throughout Canada, the Northern Arctic, Europe and Asia, the artist’s favourite subject matter remains the backyards of Toronto’s old neighbourhoods: he focuses on painting the personality of a house, which he feels is most accurately portrayed from the back, which provides more shape and character, than the pristine front that homeowner wants to portray to the public.
As a founding member of the Society of Canadian Artists and an active member of the Toronto Arts & Letters Club, John exhibits his paintings in numerous private and public collections as well as with the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour. John’s work may be found among a long list of private, public and corporate collections such as; I.B.M., Shell Oil and the University of Toronto.
