Born in Montreal in 1954, Lynda Schneider Granatstein studies at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts under Arthur Lismer, then at Concordia University and at the Saydie Bronfman Centre, where she specializes in etching techniques (aqua fortis) and collagraph. Concurrently with her artistic training, Granatstein obtains her bachelor’s degree in liberal arts (psychology) from McGill University in 1976, followed in 1979 by a master’s degree in education.
Over the years, Lynda Schneider Granatstein explores diverse styles and techniques (raised drawing, pastel, oil, traditional Balinese painting) while leading weekly workshops in her Old-Montreal studio and teaching at the Saydie Bronfman Centre; she is also a regular guest speaker at McGill and Concordia Universities as well as at art symposiums and cultural events.
Her technique is a blend of collagraph, aqua fortis on metal, natural fibre paper collage with freestyle drawing and painting. Granatstein particularly enjoys working with handcrafted papers, and her recent work concentrates figuratively (nudes, silhouettes, flowers) and symbolically on elements of the psyche.
