Born in 1929, Pearl Levy is both an idealist and a great optimist. Her work clearly demonstrates that, while the artist knows that perfection is out of reach, true fulfilment lies in endeavouring to attain it, the quest alone making one a better person…
Levy felt something was missing when she painted (watercolour, acrylic, oil), but she was unable to quite put her finger on what that was until someone handed her a piece of soapstone : « Until then, I hadn’t realized how the creative force could be stimulated by the touch of stone, by tri-dimensional work ». Classes at Université du Québec follow this realization; she masters her craft to such an extent that she begins teaching there.
Levy’s sculptures are of a streamlined realism, they have an elegant simplicity which leaves room for the essence of things, whether they are sculpted in marble or cast in bronze. Levy’s art brings out the best in humanity, which certainly contributes to the artist’s success, and her works are found among the collections of many private and public institutions, both in Canada and abroad.
