Born in Québec City in 1953, Simon Carmichael feels he owes a lot to painter George Marcil who, with his unwavering support of his work, proved to be a mentor as well as a friend.
A self-taught artist, Carmichael enjoys painting the landscape before him, which offers a basic structure from which he substracts rather than adds, until equilibrium is achieved on the canvas.
« I believe that a man’s character, in many respects, is determined by the landscape in which he lives. I also believe that, as as seeks out order and character in his subject, a painter strives to identify and express those same qualities in himself. »
