Berthe Des Clayes
1877-1968
Born in Aberdeen, Scotland, eldest sister of Alice Des Clayes and Gertrude Des Clayes, she studied with B. Herkomer at the Bushey School of Art, England; with Tony Robert-Fleury and Jules Lefebvre at the Académie Julian, Paris, France.
She lived in London (1906-1912) and came to Canada in 1912 and settled in Montreal. She travelled to England and France around 1919-1920. She then returned to England where she lived at Chorleywood until 1931. She returned to Montreal where she lived until about 1951. Was in Devon, England in 1967 and died the following year at the age of 91.
She won the Jessie Dow Prize twice and regularly participated at the Spring Exhibition at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and the Royal Canadian Academy annual shows. Her fondness for the Canadian landscape also pushed her to illustrate two books. She was mainly a landscape painter who also did portraits. She worked in oils, water colours in an impressionistic style but is mainly known for her pastels.
