Canadien Masters Contemporary Artists

As a young photographer, Michel Bigué specialises in artwork photgraphy and learns the ropes working with various Canadian artists with whom he develops a strong rapport. After receiving an arts degree, and having woven a tight network of contacts during his numerous travels accross the country, his interest in the visual arts world soon grows into a passion : in 1976, Galerie d’art Michel Bigué is founded.

Galerie d’art Michel Bigué offers one of the most extensive selections of works by early Canadian masters, making it a premier destination for collectors of Canadian art, both from here and abroad.

The gallery’s solid reputation, coupled with its founder’s collaborative work in the publishing of various reference documents on Canadian art, has made Galerie d’art Michel Bigué an active partner in exhibitions held by major museums throughout Canada, as well as an important resource for the acquisitions departments of many Canadian institutions, private and public alike.

As a complement, the works of many prominent contemporary artists are displayed on the premises at St. Sauveur, in the Laurentians.

Over the years, the gallery has featured major events on the Canadian art scene : exhibitions and retrospectives dedicated to Suzor-Coté, Fortin, the Group of Seven, Lemieux, Beaulieu, Ferron, in addition to major showings of works by contemporary artists.

In an effort to offer the widest possible range of subjects and styles to its clientele, Galerie d’art Michel Bigué expanded : since April 1998, Galerie Art Québécois shows the still-life, landscape and portrait works of some thirty active artists.

Housed in a historic property in St. Sauveur, Galerie Art Québecois is alive with the spirits of artists such as M.-A. Fortin, A.Y. Jackson and Anne Savage, who stayed there when it was home to André Biéler, creator of a mural depicting St. Christopher now preserved on an interior wall of the gallery.

The latest addition to the group, Canadian Fine Arts gallery, opened in Toronto in 2000. It showcases paintings by important Canadian Masters (Krieghoff, Morrice, Suzor-Coté, the Group of Seven) and by Moderns (Milne, Lemieux, Riopelle), while introducing and promoting works by younger artists.
