Marcelle Maltais

Marcelle Maltais was born in Chicoutimi, Quebec, where she started studying art at the young age of fourteen. From 1950 to 1955, she studied at the École des Beaux-Arts de Québec under Jean Dallaire, Jean Paul Lemieux and Jean Soucy. In 1955 she won First Prize in painting at the Quebec Provincial Exhibition and soon after held her first show at the Palais Montcalm, Quebec. The following year she made her debut in Toronto where she held a solo show at the Greenwich Art Gallery.
In 1957, she held a solo show at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and in 1958, she left for France and settled in Paris where she painted for a year. She returned home, continued her painting and in 1960, she was awarded a Canada Council Grant enabling her to return to Paris and also live, paint and exhibit her work in Greece.
From 1958 on, she held regular solo shows in Canada, the United States and France, and exhibited in many important art venues including the Canadian Biennales (1959, 1961, 1963, 1965), the Spring Exhibitions at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (1958-1964), the Paris Biennale (1964), the Artistes de Montréal exhibition at the Musée d’Art Contemporain de Montréal (1965) and several international shows in Czechoslovakia, Italy and New York. In 1962, she was part of the Contemporary Quebec Painters exhibition along with Jacques de Tonnancour, Jean Paul Lemieux, Philip Surrey, John Lyman, Albert Dumouchel, Marcelle Ferron, Jean Dallaire, Charles Gagnon, Rita Letendre, Jean McEwen, Guido Molinari, Alfred Pellan, Arthur Lismer and Marion Scott. The exhibition was organized by the National Gallery of Canada and traveled across western Canada.
She was a member of the Association des Artistes Non-Figuratifs de Montréal along with many other prominent Canadian artists, including Guido Molinari, Fernand Leduc, Patterson Ewen, Fernand Toupin, Louis Belzile and Jean-Paul Mousseau. They exhibited together at many venues including at the National Gallery of Canada, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and at the Société des Arts Plastiques de la Province de Québec (1955-1956).
