Thomas Garside (Thomas Hilton Garside)

1906-1980


Thomas Garside was born at Dukinfield, England. He came to Canada with his family in 1914 where he first studied at Council of Arts and Manufactures at the Monument National taking night classes under Edmond Dyonnet and Adam Sherriff-Scott. He also took classes under Paul Caron and W.H. Taylor at the Art Association of Montreal.

He mainly painted  landscapes in the Quebec areas of the Laurentians, the Charlevoix and the Eastern Townships, but also painted at Cape-Cod in the United-States and in the province of Newfoundland as well. He admired the work of F.S. Coburn, who aslo worked on similar subjetcs as Garside.

He exhibited at the Royal Canadian Academy and at the Ontario Society of Artists shows and was a regular exhibitor between 1934 and 1949 at the Spring Exhibitions of the Art Association of Montreal. The Art Association later bought a large canvas of his at the 1944 show.

During his career he displayed his paintings at the Stevens Art Gallery and the Continental Galleries. He was elected an Associate of the Royal Canadian Academy in 1945 and made a full member later on. He died at the age of 74.
